The Endeca Search Engine, which powers Collection Manager, utilizes a uniquely effective data structure to provide advanced query capabilities for high-performance searches across the entire spectrum of titles in the Blackwell database. A company barely a decade old, Endeca now serves over 600 major organizations, including: NASA, Ford, the National Cancer Institute, the Library of Congress, Home Depot, Lexis-Nexis, Boeing, Autotrader.com, and Cox Newspapers, to name a few. Through a powerful combination of search, navigation and other specialized features, the Endeca engine is able to quickly guide Collection Manager users to the right content-no matter where it resides in our database.
All this means you can perform sophisticated, faceted searches employing a wide array of descriptors and expect prompt, relevant results. Where straight-forward searches will yield desired results, Collection Manager offers an effective Quick Search mechanism for browsing by ISBN, author, and keywords. For more complex needs, Advanced Searching offers a host of descriptors that can be used in combination to retrieve titles of interest. Where your search produces more hits than is desirable, you can use our Search Within Results function to quickly drill down to those titles that are most pertinent.
Using the principles of Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR), Collection Manager organizes all versions of each title under one work family master record, with access to each edition within the record: US/UK, hardcover/paperback, print/electronic, etc. This approach will help you access the particular version of each title you seek in a streamlined, efficient workflow.
E-books are as easy to identify and order on Collection Manager as print books. Blackwell is an authorized dealer of e-books from the ebrary, EBL, and MyiLibrary platforms. Combined, these aggregators make available hundreds of thousands of academic electronic books. The workflows for identifying and ordering these books are no different than for any other titles in the database. If your library has not yet signed a license with these ebook aggregators, there may be some initial paperwork to fill out. Once completed, Collection Manager can be your centralized marketplace for discovering, evaluating, and obtaining e-books for your library’s collection.
Where an e-book version of a title exists, you will have access to the full content of that book through Collection Manager. Whether you want to order the print or e-version of a title, you will be able to review its content before making a decision to purchase.
You can save searches that are particularly useful and schedule their use in order to keep yourself updated on the most current titles being published. You can also store results on Bookshelves which can be accessed later for review and ordering, or shared with colleagues.
If your library has its approval plan with Blackwell, the new Collection Manager will help you get the most out of it. Viewing your profile is now much easier than ever before. Expandable profile parameters allow you to select areas that are as broad or specific as you care to review. Once you’ve selected an area within the plan, you can see recent titles shipped and treated with just the click of your mouse.
Equally easy is the ability to review approval or pre-pub notification slips online. As a selector you can examine each title’s metadata or look inside the book, and forward your purchase recommendations to Acquisitions for ordering. The process is smooth and efficient, as are the other workflow features in Collection Manager.
