Tables of Contents Catalog Enrichment Service

Now there is an even more effective way to get your collection off the shelf and into the hands of your patrons: Tables of Contents Catalog Enrichment from Blackwell.

Blackwell offers one of the largest tables of contents database that you can put into your patrons’ hands. To your patrons, this means deeper access to content for more focused and well-informed book selection. To libraries, it means increased circulation of each title.

MaRC Enrichment

Through a proprietary MaRC record editing capability, we enrich your catalog records—regardless of where the books were purchased. Descriptive summaries and author notes, from book jackets, can be added to your records without increasing the per record price of your tables of contents purchase.

The process is simple and flexible. Once contents are indexed and displayed in the local catalog, the benefits reported come from many areas within the library.

Benefits

Your Reference staff will be delighted to be able to search for information on topics that are only available at the chapter level. This information is inaccessible without access to content notes. Also, chapter titles often provide access to current topics prior to the assignment of an LC subject heading.

From an Acquisitions point of view, as book budgets tighten it makes sense to maximize access to the materials you can afford. Reduction in costly Interlibrary Loan transactions is realized because contents notes provide more information to the borrower. Blackwell can provide this data for less than your Technical Services staff could key it.

Coverage

Our database has information dating back to 1991, allowing us to provide retrospective enrichment of materials you already own. We have tables of contents covering more than 45,000 new publications each year - a growth rate of 800 to 900 records a week. Blackwell focuses on high distribution monographic titles published by University, Sci-tech, Trade, and Specialty publishers, where the titles are of interest to Academic institutions. In addition to tables of contents, title summaries from dust jackets and author affiliation information can be added to your records for the same per record price.

What’s the process?

Send us your local MaRC records, regardless of where the books were purchased, and we will enhance your records by adding contents notes. You can determine the enrichment schedule and let us know whenever you’d like to send data. There’s never a queue for processing. Enrichment is extremely flexible - you can send as many or as few records as you wish. Overnight turnaround is available for ongoing enrichment to minimize the impact on your cataloging and database maintenance workflow. There is no extra cost for this expedited service.

Blackwell has arrangements with all major authority control providers to coordinate enrichment so you don’t have to send data to two places.
