These points were adopted for Blackwell Recommends to maintain the quality of the program.

  1. The monthly subject calendar allows publishers and libraries to know exactly when topics will be listed. The subject calendar is based on the following criteria:
    • The Choice editorial calendar (we match Choice when possible)
    • Important events (i.e. elections, publishing events, etc.)
    • The Blackwell UK promotional calendar (so that we can link our promotions)
    • Suggestions from publishers
    • Suggestions from customers
  2. Each month Blackwell Recommends includes top titles from leading publishers in each subject area. In some instances publishers suggest titles, in others we ask publishers to include certain titles. Titles are chosen based on:
    • Publishers consider forthcoming or recent titles to be significant
    • Publishers respond to reviews and/or strong sales with post-publication marketing
    • Titles are reviewed by library-oriented media (either pre or post- publication)
    • Titles are recommended by Blackwell staff
    • If a publisher has a suitable title but cannot pay our fee, we will consider including the title based on its expected importance to customers
    • Blackwell Recommends includes all versions of titles (cloth, paper, electronic) that are available
  3. It is our intent to always safeguard the value of Blackwell recommending certain titles. To that end, all titles submitted are vetted by Blackwell Book Services and must adhere to the criteria listed above.
    • Expectations about title quality are made available to participating publishers
    • When in doubt about titles, Blackwell staff ask for input from colleagues and look at past performance by the author/publisher
    • Low level and titles not deemed suitable to an academic collection have been and will continue to be rejected
    • Blackwell staff will let publishers know what has been rejected and why
    • Blackwell will not include publishers whose books are of dubious quality to our customers
  4. As noted above, Blackwell Recommends is a work in progress. The following are a few of the ideas that will be included in our future development plans:
    • Expanded cooperation between retail and library sides of Blackwell Book Services
    • Growing cooperation with James Bennett in Australia and Houtschild in The Netherlands to expand the range of titles recommended
    • Linking Blackwell Recommends to Collection Manager searches
    • Working with peer review groups to include reviewed titles
