What’s being said about Library Dynamics?

"One such company with an impressive array of tools in its application is Library Dynamics. Though it seems impossible, one mark of a good analysis tool is that it can generate meaningful reports for front-line staff as well as decision-makers and boardrooms. Library Dynamics includes many collection analysis tools from weeding reports to deep collection assessment."

"As the pilot project got underway this past Fall, an important new collection analysis software product came into play. Library Dynamics, a technology company headquartered in Virginia, developed recently a software tool called "Spectra Dimension" that analyzes library collections … this product not only analyzes the data of one library but it is able to compare the collection and use data between two or more libraries, or between a library and other collection data sets of various types. To my knowledge, this product is the first of its kind. Since one objective of the Pilot Project is to reduce needless duplication among libraries, Spectra Dimension will provide use data on numbers of copies to help libraries determine realistically the numbers of needed copies. Another objective of the Pilot is to improve the quality of the Alliance collections as a whole, and Spectra Dimension also will provide data for this purpose.

We believe Spectra Dimension will help overcome a significant hurdle in collaborative collection development-lack of effective tools for collection analysis.”

"A Super collection analysis product…at the [The Charleston] Conference was Spectra CRC from Library Dynamics"

"[Spectra CRC]…. a new tool from Library Dynamics …combines machine-readable shelflists with contemporary data-mining techniques.

In some ways, I think of this as "the [RLG] Conspectus on steroids," a way that libraries and consortia can compare holdings without being drowned in details."

Library Dynamics . . .has developed the most impressive data-analysis product I saw in the exhibits.

The product analyzes and compares collections for decision support more deeply and thoroughly than any other collection analysis product I have seen.

… I am convinced that an all purpose data-mining product has significant limitations, because no generic tool can serve all analytic needs well.

The best products are those that are tailored for very specific types of analysis, because each kind of data analysis requires its own software.

The deeper the developer’s understanding of the type of analysis being attempted, the better the product will be. “
