Blackwell Preferred Edition Service is a unique two-part enhancement providing approval customers with a choice of either the cloth or the paperback edition of a title when they are available simultaneously, or, for those choosing joint approval plans, either the UK or the US edition of a new title, based on publication date or price. These additions to our approval offerings are possible because of Blackwell coordinated buying and unified new titles database. They allow a library to choose the best edition for its particular needs.
A new non-subject descriptor is used to flag simultaneous cloth and paperback titles. Approval customers specify at the sub-profile level that they prefer the paperback edition and set parameters for the desired price differential between the editions. Both the cloth and paperback editions are selected by our buyers and entered into the new titles database. If the title proves upon publication to be simultaneous and if the paperback edition meets the price parameters, the paperback edition is supplied. If it turns out that it is not a simultaneous edition, we will provide the edition actually supplied by the publisher.
The title details in Collection Manager™ show that we have treated both editions of a simultaneous publication. We offer a 10% approval discount for simultaneous paperback editions. We will also provide re-binding of paperback editions at current prices.
The earliest or least expensive edition is available for customers with joint UK and US approval plans. We research every UK original title upon publication to determine if there will be a North American edition, and if so, what the expected price and publication date of that edition. We then deliver the earliest and/or least expensive edition based on the price and timeliness parameters set by each library. This service can work across an entire approval profile or at the sub-profile level.
The enhancements that make up a preferred edition allow customers to receive the recognized benefits of a Blackwell Approval Plan while obtaining additional value for their approval funds.
