Opening a library, adding a new branch, or simply expanding your collection can take a monumental amount of thought, time, and energy. With Blackwell as your partner, you will have seasoned assistance in everything from customizing your selection list to providing shelf-ready titles.
Contact us at the beginning stages of your project and we can do as much or as little as you want. The important point is for you to end up with the collection you require on the date you need it. Whether you are working on a new library, a new branch of your library, or a collection expansion, you should consider Blackwell Opening Day Collection services.
We know how crucial selection of materials is for an Opening Day Collection. Our professional staff can delve deep and search wide to find appropriate titles for your library or community of readers. Blackwell selection objective is to reflect the curriculum of your institution or the character of your patron’s needs. Selection criteria will be a mixture of Library of Congress Subject Headings, Blackwell Subject Thesaurus terms, Publishers, Publication Dates, Prices, Readership Level, and many more parameters found in our profiling tools. Selected lists of reference titles can be a source, or access to titles recommended in CHOICE magazine.
Blackwell relationship with thousands of publishers means we are able to order any title available through normal wholesale channels. You can be assured we can meet your collection needs from books, to ebooks, to multi-media.
Shelf-ready and catalog-ready materials are crucial to an Opening Day Collection. It is imperative for materials to arrive ready to be shelved and already cataloged. Blackwell can offer their shelf-ready services to accomplish this. In partnership with OCLC’s PromptCat and TechPro services or using Blackwell MaRC with Books with TechPro all titles purchased can be cataloged with full MaRC records. In addition spine labels can be generated from information in the MaRC records using Library of Congress or Dewey decimal classification.
Complete physical processing of each book or multi-media item is based on your library’s unique specifications. Barcodes can be affixed to all types of materials, and linked to MaRC records. Property stamps, security devices, bookplates, date due slips, Kapco lamination of paperbacks, mylar on dust jackets, are some of the basic physical processing services available. Blackwell can do whatever it takes to make your materials shelf-ready!
We realize how important it is to open a new library on schedule. Blackwell offers to do much of the coordination for acquiring and processing your materials by appointing a Project Manager that will help you every step of the way. In cooperation with available staff at your library a firm schedule will be established and an eye kept on the expected opening day. Regular reporting will mark progress towards the goal.
There may be special invoicing and shipping requirements if the new physical facility is not available until near the opening day of the library. Blackwell is prepared to negotiate the timing of invoicing and delivery of materials, and even offer warehousing when necessary.
We know that the opening of a new library is crucial in laying the foundation for years to come as you build and expand to meet the demands of your patrons. Blackwell Book Services has the services and knowledge to find the titles that reflect the curriculum of your institution.
