Cataloging: Take a Shortcut to Shelf-Ready: Let Us Provide the Cataloging

Save yourself countless staff hours by letting us handle linking books to cataloguing—either through our MaRC with Books Service or OCLC’s WorldCat Cataloging Partners service. Learn more about these competitively priced options below.

MaRC with Books Service by Blackwell Book Services

The MaRC with Books service has been available for over 20 years. It provides MaRC records from the Library of Congress, National Library of Canada, and the British Library in the MaRC21 format. Most US/Canadian or UK/European editions of English language titles are covered by this service whether they originate as firm orders, form orders, or approvals. To start the service, fill out the MaRC with Books setup profile or simply send an email request to techserv@blackwell.com, and one of our experts will contact you. All books invoiced in a particular week are matched to MaRC records according to each Library’s specifications, and are available weekly for retrieval via FTP.

Three levels of MaRC records are available to match your books--from the very brief to the very complete:

CIP Upgrades

Newly received books with matching CIP records that correspond to Blackwell’s New Titles Service are eligible for Blackwell CIP Upgrade. In a cooperative arrangement with OCLC, experienced MaRC editors from both OCLC and Blackwell complete the upgrades. The upgraded CIP records are added to Blackwell’s cataloging database and are available for delivery via Blackwell MaRC Services at time of book shipment.

Record Customization

A Blackwell Technical Services Account Manager works with your library staff to determine what best suits your library’s workflow, and what type of customization options are available to tailor records to your Integrated Library System. Custom item field configurations can include location code generation, the insertion of barcode numbers in the MaRC record, or the addition of local notes. Some record customization is standard; some is special but we will lend our expertise to all requests.

Any one of the above MaRC with Books records can be enriched with tables of contents, title summaries, and author affiliation information. Read more about our Tables of Contents Catalog Enrichment Service.

Blackwell Services in Cooperation with OCLC

Customers have the option of using OCLC’s WorldCat Cataloging Partners service as a source of cataloging for materials ordered or invoiced from Blackwell. Holdings are set in WorldCat and a MaRC record is produced for each title finding a match. WorldCat offers customized record editing, Partnering Data Records for titles not finding matches in WorldCat, and a cataloging report for each delivery of records.

Time-of-Order WorldCat Cataloging Partners

Blackwell’s Time-of-Order service delivers OCLC WorldCat records with embedded order data (fund, location, price, etc.) at time of order. This provides libraries with data necessary to automatically create orders and encumbrances, as well as permanent OPAC records, in most library systems. The Time-of-Order service involves simple procedures for tagging titles in Collection Manager, adding order-related data, and exporting the records for Blackwell transmission to OCLC. Records are delivered to the library on a daily basis via FTP.

Time-of-Invoice WorldCat Cataloging Partners

Blackwell Time-of-Invoice service delivers OCLC WorldCat records to the library by sending a manifest of titles with pertinent invoicing and bibliographic information to OCLC. Spine labels are provided to Blackwell so that processing of books can be completed. Records are generated twice weekly via FTP.

To obtain more details about the WorldCat Cataloging Partners service go to www.oclc.org or contact your OCLC regional network provider. Your Blackwell Technical Services Account Manager can help your library initiate the WorldCat service.

OCLC’s TechPro

When every book in a library’s Blackwell shipment must arrive fully catalogued and completely shelf ready, the library can utilize OCLC’s Techpro service as a compliment to MaRC with Books. With Techpro, cataloguing is completed by OCLC staff according to a unique library’s specifications. MaRC records are delivered to the library by OCLC at the same time a call number is communicated to Blackwell for the creation of a spine label to complete physical book processing. Blackwell will facilitate the setup and ongoing interface of the TechPro service; however, the library must establish a contract and pricing directly with OCLC for the provision of MaRC records.

Contact your Blackwell Technical Services Account Manager for more information about our cataloging options. Just send an email to techserv@blackwell.com or call 800-547-6426.
